Adopt a Soldier
I finally had a chance to read all your emails and learn a little bit about you. I figured I would return the favor and tell you about myself. I'm Glen Gyldersleve, a specialist (my rank is just below Sergeant). I'm working on getting my promotion this year, so I may be SGT. Gyldersleve in the upcoming months. I work with the 467th Medical Detachment, which is a Combat Stress Control unit. I'm with a small prevention team thats been attached to another unit here at Fob (Forward Operating Base) Farah. I have a 7 year old daughter who I miss every day.
While I support the combat mission, my job doesn't take me near the conflict very often. Thankfully, things have been quiet here as well. That said, most of what we deal with here is isolation from home and boredom. I suppose this is something we can be grateful for.
At least one of you asked about whether there were specific Xbox and PSP games that we'd like - I'd say people out here love the cool new games, but those are not cheap. What I'm looking to do is get a collection of shared games that we can put into our game room that people can check out. On that note - any amount of used games (xbox 360, playstation, psp) are more than welcome.
A note note on hygeine: We don't need most hygeine supplies. We get a pretty good amount of these from other care packages. I think we're good on toothpaste for the next 3 years :) Of the hygeine supplies that we can use - good body wash, better razor blades and female co-worker just mentioned good quality female branded shaving cream.
Other stuff we could use:
Nice writing paper and envelopes - its nice to write home on good paper.
***!! Writing journals - I'm trying to give these out to my clients to help with personal journaling to start to deal with some of the stressors they are going through.
Pens - any good ones, something you like to use to write home or in a journal.
Candy - who doesn't love candy? hard shell of some kind (travels better): mike and ikes, red hots, runts, skittles and so on.
Snacks - whatever will ship well.
Electrolyte supplements. Any powdered mix that you can add to water (we drink a great deal of bottled water 1/2 L.).
I have a personal wish list on Amazon, but things can get pricey there and my personal needs are not as interesting to me now as what I can get for my co-workers and the people here on the fob.
Here it is anyway :)
http://www.amazon.com/
- That also has a list of items that would be great to get here to give out: soccer balls, travel mugs, folding camp chairs and so on. Since these are pricier items, I have low expectations on being able to get them.
I know what would be really helpful would be to get a collection/donation for our local phone service, so that people could call home more often.
Here's the info on buying a group of calling cards to send over:

Thanks again for helping out. If you have any ideas or resources of things you'd like to send, please don't hesitate to ask.
